Why we love this recipe:
This dish is perfect when we are short of time but want a dip or side dish which is colourful, nutritious and full of flavour. All ingredients are readily available, so it is not necessary to spend much time shopping.
We love that:
- It is suitable for many people with specific dietary requirements as it is naturally dairy-free, gluten-free and vegan.
- The colours are vibrant, the flavours are sweet, spicy, tangy and savoury and perfectly complement each other.
- The crunch of red onion and the slight tartness of strawberries contrasts with the smooth, creamy avocado. Fresh lime juice adds brightness, and the jalapeno adds some spice.
- It is quickly and easily made; you can have it on the table in just under 15 minutes.
Ingredients in this recipe:
Please see the recipe card further along in the post for exact quantities of ingredients and the full method.
Strawberries – for the best flavour, choose those with bright red colour and vibrant green leaves.
Avocado – a ripe avocado will yield slightly to gentle pressure. Press gently at the top of the fruit.
Red Onion – they are milder than brown/yellow onions and sweeter than white onions.
Coriander/cilantro – adds a citrus-type tang. You could use mint or basil instead.
Green Jalapeño – for heat.
Juice and zest of lime – for bright flavour.
Sea salt – a great flavour booster.
Step by step instructions:
- Finely dice the red onion.
- Soak the onion in the lime juice and salt for 10 minutes.
- Whilst soaking, finely dice the strawberries, avocado and jalapeño and add to a medium-size bowl. Finely chop the coriander and add to the bowl. Add the onion and lime mixture to the avocado and strawberries with the lime zest.
- Mix gently and serve straight away.
Tips for success and FAQs:
You will get the best result if you use ingredients that are in good condition. Use fruits that are not over-ripe as this will ensure that the salsa does not become mushy.
Finely dice the ingredients – this makes the salsa easier to scoop with chips.
It is best eaten shortly after tossing the ingredients together. However, you can prepare the ingredients a little ahead of time but keep them all separate. To prevent the avocado from oxidising and becoming brown, it is best prepared shortly before serving.
Mint or basil would be great alternatives.
Wash your strawberries before removing the stem end, also known as the calyx or hull, to avoid the berries absorbing too much water. Don’t wash them until you’re almost ready to use them. Put them in a colander and quickly rinse them. Lay them on a tea towel or paper towel and gently pat dry.
Many people simply slice off the top of the strawberry, but it does waste a certain amount of fruit. I prefer to remove the hull. To do this, hold a berry in one hand and a small, sharp paring knife in your dominant hand. Hold the knife at an angle and insert the tip of the knife into the strawberry next to the stem. Turn the strawberry in your hand. Create a cone shape and gently lift the green hull from the fruit. There is less waste, and the fruit retains its shape.
Serve with corn chips, pita chips or crostini. It is also delicious alongside my Roast Chicken.

Strawberry Avocado Salsa
Please note:
For accuracy, when weights are provided, we recommend weighing your ingredients. This will produce the best results. All oven temperatures listed are for fan forced.
Ingredients
- ยฝ small red onion
- 1 tablespoon lime juice – freshly squeezed See Notes 1 and 2
- ยฝ teaspoon sea salt – flakes or cooking salt, not table salt
- 225 g (8 oz) strawberries See Note 3
- 1 avocado See Note 4
- ยฝ cup fresh coriander/cilantro – stems and leaves, finely chopped See Note 5
- 1 green Jalapeño See Note 6
- 1 teaspoon lime zest
- sea salt – to taste
Instructions
- Finely dice the red onion.
- Soak the onion in the lime juice and salt for 10 minutes.
- Whilst soaking, finely dice the strawberries, avocado and jalapeño and add to a medium-size bowl.
- Finely chop the coriander and add to the bowl.
- Add the onion and lime mixture to the avocado and strawberries with the lime zest. Mix gently and serve straight away.
Notes
- The Australian tablespoon is 20 ml or 4 teaspoons. In many other countries, the tablespoon is 15 ml or 3 teaspoons. Please adjust the measurement if necessary.
- Further in the recipe, you will require the lime zest. Be sure to remove the zest before juicing the lime.
- For the best flavour, choose ripe strawberries. They should be a bright, glossy red and their leaves a vibrant green.
- Your avocado should be just ripe, not overripe. If it is too soft, the salsa will become mushy. To check for ripeness, press an avocado gently at the top of the fruit. A ripe avocado will yield slightly to gentle pressure. If it gives too much, it is extremely ripe and will be hard to dice cleanly and may not hold its shape in the salsa.
- For the salsa, I include the coriander stems. They have great flavour, just chop them finely.
- If you don’t want the heat, just leave the Jalapeño out. If you like some spice, keep the seeds in the chilli.
- Ensure that the dish is adequately seasoned to your liking, to bring out the best flavour.
