Why you’ll love this recipe:

A great breakfast is the ideal start to the day – and when combined with coffee, it’s even better!

This is a breakfast that takes just minutes to prepare the night before. Simply add your favourite toppings in the morning and enjoy. It is a great breakfast to enjoy at home or on the go. Delicious and nutritious – just perfect!

You will love these Espresso Coffee Overnight Oats because:

  • They have a great depth of coffee flavour. The perfect morning pick-me-up!
  • Meal prep is made easy with these oats – they will last for three days in the fridge.
  • Of how quick they are to prepare – make your coffee and combine it with your other ingredients and place it in the refrigerator overnight.
  • The quantities can easily be adjusted to your needs – the written recipe serves two, but can easily be halved or doubled!

Ingredients in this recipe:

Please see the recipe card further along in the post for exact quantities of ingredients and the full method.

Ingredients in this recipe on a white background.

Espresso coffee – I make a couple of cups of coffee for these oats, as I love the strong flavour! I use an espresso coffee machine, but you could also a filter, plunger or Moka pot depending on your preference.

Old Fashioned Rolled Oats – these are the best oats for this recipe. Steel-cut oats and quick-cooking oats can be used in some overnight oats recipes, but may have a different ratio of liquid, and will produce a different texture. I recommend using a recipe specific to these oat types.

Milk – I have used almond milk, but you can use any milk of your preference. Soy or oat also work well, as does dairy milk.

Greek yoghurt – because of the high water content in the coffee, adding some yoghurt into the mix gives a delicious creamy texture to the oats. You can use yoghurt of your preference, but keep it plain flavoured to allow the coffee to shine.

Chia seeds – these help to give the oats a nice thick texture and also add some extra fibre. Black or white chia seeds are fine to use in this recipe.

Maple syrup – for a hint of extra sweetness. Adjust this to your liking – if you are used to drinking sweet coffee, you may wish to add a little more when serving.

How to Make Coffee Overnight Oats:

Please see the recipe card further along in the post for exact quantities of ingredients and the full method.

Steps 1-2 of preparing this recipe - the espresso coffee in a white bowl, and mixing the coffee together with the milk and maple syrup.

1 – Make your coffee:
Make your coffee and add it to a medium-sized bowl. Allow the coffee to cool for a few minutes.

2 – Combine with the other liquids:
To the slightly cooled coffee, add the milk, maple syrup and yoghurt. Whisk well to combine.

Steps 3-4 of preparing this recipe - adding the chia and oats to the coffee mixture and the oats in a jar ready to be refrigerated.

3 – Add the remaining ingredients:
To the coffee mixture, add your rolled oats and chia seeds. Whisk or stir the mixture until evenly combined.

4 – Refrigerate:
Cover the bowl with clingwrap, or divide the mixture into two glasses or mason jars and cover. Refrigerate for 6 hours or overnight.

Tips for success and FAQs:

These Espresso Coffee Overnight Oats are so delicious and very simple to prepare. As there are such few ingredients, I do recommend using the best quality available – especially when it comes to the coffee!

How long will the Espresso Coffee Overnight Oats last?

For the best taste and texture, enjoy them within three days.

What is the best coffee to use?

I use my espresso coffee machine and a nice strong blend. Use whatever machine and blend you normally use to make your morning coffee – you know best how you like it!

How long do the Oats have to be in the fridge before consumption?

Refrigerate your overnight oats mixture for at least 6 hours. I make mine just before bed and they’re perfect in the morning!

Are Old Fashioned Rolled Oats Gluten-Free?

There are different rules regarding this, depending on where you live in the world. For Australian residents, Coeliac Australia provides a great resource on this topic. Always be sure to read the labels and consult with a health professional if you are unsure.

Variations and substitutions:

Milk – you can use any milk of your choice for this recipe.

Maple syrup – you could also use honey. Mix it into the coffee whilst it is still warm so it blends easier.

Yoghurt – I have used Greek yoghurt. Any plain yoghurt will work fine in this recipe.

Serving suggestions:

Working out what toppings to use with your Espresso Coffee Overnight Oats is one of the best parts!

For this recipe, I like to use a topping of Greek yoghurt and a dusting of cocoa powder for a Cappucino effect.

You could also add:

  • Chopped walnuts or almonds – they provide a great crunch against the oats.
  • A sprinkle of cinnamon – a spice that perfectly complements coffee.
  • Mashed or sliced banana.

Enjoy these delicious Espresso Coffee Overnight Oats. I hope you’ll love the ease of preparation and great taste – be sure to let me know what you think in the comments below!

For accuracy, when weights are provided, we recommend weighing your ingredients. This will produce the best results. All oven temperatures listed are for fan forced.

Ingredients

For the Overnight Oats:

  • ½ cup (120 ml) espresso coffee See Note 1
  • ¼ cup (60 ml) milk – I use almond or oat See Note 2
  • 2 tablespoon maple syrup See Note 3
  • ¼ cup (60 ml) Greek yoghurt
  • 1 cup (80 g) old fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds See Note 3

Toppings (optional):

  • Greek yoghurt
  • cocoa powder – a dusting

Instructions

  • Make your coffee – I used an espresso coffee machine and made two shots of coffee, running for ¼ cup (60 ml) each shot. Set the coffee aside to cool for a few minutes.
  • In a medium-size bowl, add the coffee, maple syrup, milk and yoghurt and whisk until well combined.
  • Add the oats and chia seeds and stir to combine.
  • Cover the bowl with clingwrap, or divide the mixture into two glasses or mason jars and cover. Refrigerate for 6 hours or overnight.
  • Serve with toppings of your choice and additional milk if the mixture is too thick.

Notes

  1. Coffee: I used an espresso coffee machine and used two shots of coffee, running each for ¼ cup (60 ml). You can also use a filter, plunger or Moka pot.
  2. Milk: use milk of your choice. I use almond or oat milk. Add more milk when serving if you prefer a thinner texture.
  3. Tablespoon: we use a standard Australian tablespoon which is 20 ml (4 teaspoons).
  4. Toppings: the toppings are optional (and are not included in the nutritional information). Use toppings of your liking – see suggestions above.
